What families see when they Google your nursing home
A hospital hands a family a list of facilities. Within minutes, they’re searching each name on their phone. Here’s what they find, in the order they find it, and what to fix first.
Picture discharge day. A social worker hands a daughter a printed list of skilled nursing facilities with available beds. She has a few hours, maybe a day, to choose. She isn’t going to tour all of them. She is going to sit in the hallway, open her phone, and search each name.
That search is your first impression. It usually happens before anyone from your admissions team knows the family exists. Here’s what she sees, step by step.
1. Your Google Business Profile
The first thing on the screen is rarely your website. It’s your Google Business Profile: the box with your name, photos, star rating, phone number, hours and address.
Look at yours on a phone right now, the way a family would. Ask yourself:
- Is the phone number correct, and does someone answer it?
- Are the hours accurate, including weekends and holidays?
- Do the photos show your actual building and your actual people?
- Does the description say clearly what kind of care you provide?
A wrong phone number isn’t a small typo. It’s a family who could not reach you, and moved on to the next name on the list.
2. Your reviews, and your replies
Next, she taps your rating. Families read reviews carefully, especially the negative ones. They’re trying to answer one question: if something goes wrong, will these people take it seriously?
That’s why your replies matter as much as your rating. A facility with a few critical reviews and thoughtful, professional responses can look more trustworthy than one with a higher rating and total silence. Unanswered reviews, good or bad, make it look like nobody is paying attention.
One important note for healthcare: replies must never confirm that the reviewer, or anyone they mention, is a resident or patient. Thank them, show that you take feedback seriously, and invite them to contact you directly. Don’t discuss care details in public.
3. Your website
If your profile passes the test, she clicks through to your website. Now she is checking whether the place looks real.
This is where stock photos hurt. Families can spot them. A smiling model couple who have never been inside your building tells them nothing about your rooms, your staff or your residents. Worse, if the people in the photos don’t reflect the community you actually serve, it reads as if you’re not being honest.
Real, professional photos of your real building and people, taken with permission, are one of the strongest trust signals you can have. So is fresh content: a recent newsletter, an event recap, a staff spotlight. They all show the lights are on.
4. Your Facebook page
Many families check Facebook last, to see what daily life is like. If your most recent post is from two years ago, or it’s a generic holiday graphic, the page tells them something you probably didn’t intend: nobody is keeping this up.
What works is simple and real. Birthday celebrations, therapy milestones (with permission), activities, staff recognition, and family events. You don’t need to post every day. You need to look alive and honest.
What to fix first
If you only have time for a few things this week, do them in this order:
- Fix your Google details. Phone, hours, address, website link and categories. Make sure you have owner access to the profile.
- Answer every unanswered review. Start with the most recent, keep replies short and professional, and never share patient information.
- Replace stock photos on your Google profile and homepage with real ones, even good phone photos to start.
- Post something real on Facebook this week, and set a simple schedule you can keep.
None of this is complicated. It just tends to fall through the cracks when everyone is busy running a facility. That’s the gap Brandwagon Digital fills. We take care of everything families see when they look you up, so when your name is on the list, they choose you.
